The last time the boys’ tennis won a section championship, coach Mike Rohrbach was on the team. That was 25 years ago.
“It feels great because it’s a feat that no other Cedar Crest tennis team has done in 25 years, but I know there are bigger things in store for our team,” said senior number one singles’ player and captain Jack Muraika.
Muraika was correct in his prediction as the Falcons captured the Lancaster-Lebanon League team title, Wednesday April 24 at Ephrata. The team defeated Pequea Valley 3-2 for its first league championship since 2012, when Muraika’s brother, Colin, was on the team.
Winning for the Falcons were Muraika and junior Dylan Tull at singles, and the doubles team of seniors Justin Hilty and Enzo Emerich.
“I think it took hard work outside of the season for a lot of guys on the team,” said Muraika. “We had to have the right mindset, we were confident going in and we executed.”
Muraika won his singles matches in the finals against Pequea Valley 6-3 and 6-0, while Tull won his singles 6-0 and 6-0. Emerich and Hilty won their doubles match, 6-1 and 6-0.
“It means a lot because in my first three years, the team wasn’t at the top of the league and this year it all came together,” said Muraika.
A win at Hempfield gave the team the Section One title. The team’s overall regular season record was 13-1, only losing their first match of the season against Dallastown.
“Our team improved so much from last year and I think the hard work and dedication helped us earn our spot at the top,” said junior captain Dylan Tull.
The team is led by the top two singles players, Muraika and Tull.
“It’s just awesome to say that we won,” said Tull. “We all play a huge part on the team and we all earned this title together.
“I couldn’t have imagined winning it, but we knew we had a better shot than we ever had before.”
