Marvel impresses fans with complex plot

For viewers with enough time to delve into its background, Marvel’s latest release ‘dares’ to engross.

Season three of Netflix Original Daredevil was released Oct. 19.

It follows Matthew Murdock, played by Charlie Cox (“Stardust,” 2007, “The Theory of Everything,” 2014), as he fights crime through his alter ego Daredevil.

His long-time nemesis Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio (“Men in Black,” 1997, “Jurassic World,” 2015), returns with veiled plots.

The season is largely defined by a return to its origins, with Murdock shedding his superhero gear for a black suit and mask. In some ways, the plot also comes full circle, effectively pulling together characters and events from previous seasons.

The show’s dark tone and themes continue, accentuated by development of backstory. “Karen” focuses on journalist Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll (“True Blood,” 2008-2014, “Catch .44,” 2011), and showcases her fantastic acting combined with a tragic plot.

As usual, the season entails various fight scenes that are well-choreographed and impressive to watch, though most of these scenes are relatively small.

Even outside of these scenes, the dramatic build-up is accentuated by music and camera angles. Viewers are kept on the edge of their seats even in scenes of minor conversation due to the underlying drama.

However, it is not easy to watch this season and understand its plot without knowledge of what preceded it. It is based largely on plot points from “The Defenders,” which is difficult to understand without watching “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist.”

Without being an avid Marvel fan, this may be too much of a time commitment to become engrossed in, especially as the season does very little to fill in the blanks.

While the elements of the season themselves are excellent and live up to the show’s previous quality, it is necessary to watch other shows. This, while it is not a problem for viewers who had already seen these shows, leaves others largely in the dark.
